Summer Programs

Urban Academy is committed to the long term success of all students and host 3 programs throughout the summer to ensure that all kids SOMETHING SOMETHING GOES HERE: Summer Learning Academy (SLA), KinderSummer, and LEAP.

SUmmer Learning Academy

The Pittsburgh area has a significant achievement gap between black and white students and students from low-income families and other students. However, according to the 2017 Report to the Community by APlus Schools, the Urban Academy is one of a few schools where black students and students from low-income families do better than city averages. The school’s Summer Learning Academy (SLA) has been proven to help prevent the “summer slide” for some of our most academically challenged students. During the inaugural SLA in 2017, we were able to avoid regression in 61% of the program participants in Early Literacy, Math and Reading. The Urban Academy believes that intensive summer work will help to continue closing the achievement gap which perpetuates an opportunity gap.

Kinder Summer

KinderSummer is designed to allow incoming kindergarten students to effectively begin school in July, which is one month sooner than their schoolmates.

Students will focus on critical early learning milestones in hopes of ensuring that our newest students have an advantage at the beginning of the school year

This will include, but not limited to:

– appropriate 3-finger grasp when using writing instruments

– writing their first name

– identifying basic shapes and colors

Leap

LEAP is designed for students in the primary grades who are behind grade level and or have severe learning deficiencies.

LEAP students will participate in small group learning settings where they will focus on addressing the deficiencies as described in their data assessments and student education plans.
