History

The oldest charter school institution in Pittsburgh area is proud to have served over 2,000 scholars from throughout Allegheny County. Over the past 17 years the school has consistently provided a high quality education to low income studentsEffective for the 2015-2016 schoolyear, the school will now be called the Urban Academy of Greater Pittsburgh Charter School.

The Urban Academy will begin the 2016-17 school year in a new building with much needed space for a state of the art science center, music, drama, and art classes in 2016.

Founded in 1998,  the school has become a model of academic excellence. Our founders were African American community leaders and educators who fought to provide the children in our community a high quality education, while teaching them about their culture.

Over the years the school has been active in the community and been the recipient of many academic and achievement based grants that have help the school grow into a highly recognizable elementary school in the greater Pittsburgh community.
